Valparaiso Farmers Market
Perched between the edge of rural farmlands and Chicago near the home of the late Orville Redenbacher, Valparaiso is the sort of all-American town that is the bedrock of the home-grown food, crafts, and farmers market movement. “Our farmers market customers visit with local growers to buy the freshest vegetables. Our food craftsmen are always delighting us with their beautiful creations. It’s special to be part of that,” says market manager Amanda Saqui.
Doko Farm in South Carolina
Amana and Joe Jones have been bringing their family farm back to life ever since they took the reins from Joe’s grandfather in 2007. Dedicated to producing healthy whole foods raised responsibly and humanely, they specialize in pasture-raised heritage poultry and meats. Doko means “gathering place” and the Jones take pride in hosting visitors, tours and community events at the farm throughout the year. “We invite you to spend part of your day with us,” says Amana.
Mt. Shasta Wild
Jessica Oddo’s family has been raising livestock in the beautiful foothills of California’s Siskiyou County since the late 1880s. Today, Mt. Shasta Wild is a seventh-generation, family-run business that continues to produce range-to-table grass-fed beef. Jessica’s happy herd is allowed to forage thousands of acres of diverse plant species, not just pasture. “With just one cow per 180 acres, we’re low carbon footprint and support wildlife diversity and regenerative practices,” says Jessica.
